By Ronaldo Mohammed
Morning –
rolls off tired tongues;
escapes the prayerful lips of mothers and grandmothers blessing children.
Another day –
Awake –
‘Kiskadee’
The sound outside my window –
Wet blades of grass being ‘wackered’ down –
The faint scent of vicks and fever grass used the night before –
A new day dawns –
The kettle cries.
Talks over the Morning Brew –
“Workers laid off.”
Hot water to make coffee.
The stove is aglow with sizzling smoked herring,
Like the reddish hues in twilight.
For some, mornings are the embers of the night before.
For others, it is a new beginning.
