Blanchisseuse has always been a destination for those who enjoy nature and love the outdoors. When the French settled in 1783, there were no roads, but there was a mountain with a beautiful seashore. At rst, the area was called ‘Ladies River’, then ‘Blanchisseuse’: the French word for ‘washer woman’.
One could spend weeks roaming the valleys, hills, and forests of this scenic and verdant part of the country. Travelers who opt to take the two-hour drive from the capital Port of Spain and meander through the pristine vegetation and beaches of Maracas and Las Cuevas would not be disappointed with the breath-taking views.
In May 2017, music lovers – including Louis Lee Sing, the former mayor of Port of Spain, and Radio personality and promoter John Gill, started the festival known as ‘North Coast Jazz: Born Here, Played Here’.
Their motivation was to increase the profile and economic activity of Blanchisseuse and by extension, that of the North Coast. Above all, they felt that Trinidad and Tobago had a wealth of creative energy that needed to be shared. The result was the first edition of ‘North Coast Jazz’ last year, in 2017. Some say it is an adventure; others say it’s the best event that they have witnessed over the last few years, even countrywide.
True to its mission, North Coast Jazz provides a platform where hundreds of creative minds and musicians can share their music, their talent. It encourages wider society to embrace those who were born here and who now play music here. Its driving force emanates from the energy of our people and is meant to quench the musical thirst of those among us who delight in live Jazz and the plein-air concert experience. Apart from participating in a unique, countryside experience, the North Coast Jazz project allows one to support the creativity and entrepreneurial skills of the small businesses, artists and cultural activity in Blanchisseuse. Patrons can enjoy the local cuisine and craft of the village artisans. Former Mayor Louis Lee Sing, believes the 1200 villagers of the area have a lot to o er to visitors.
This year, the 2018 North Coast Jazz festival promises to be as lively as the premier event, with the objective of offering a culturally authentic experience that exposes you to the best and brightest local stars.
