[tw-divider]ABOUT THE SHOW[/tw-divider]

(S)HOW is an exhibition by five artist friends who are all contemporary practitioners working in Trinidad and Tobago. The show originated from a shared interest in each other’s work and a desire to exhibit as a group. (S)HOW brings together the artists’ individual concerns and ways of working across varied media into one shared space. Outside of the relationships between the artists, the show hopes to investigate the relationships between their practices, objects and gestures. Exhibiting artists include: Jaime Lee Loy, Alicia Milne, Nikolai Noel, Tamara Tam-Cruickshank and Luis Vasquez La Roche.

[tw-divider]ABOUT THE ARTISTS:[/tw-divider]

JAIME LEE LOY

Jaime Lee Loy is a contemporary artist and writer who has participated as an Artist-in-Residence in Trinidad, Vermont USA, Hoy, and Arborath Scotland. She has exhibited locally, in the USA and Europe, and the OXO Gallery in London, the World Bank USA, and at Real Art Ways, Connecticut.
She received art grants from the Reed Foundation ( New York ), Prince Claus Fund ( Netherlands ), ROSL (London), and The Trinidad and Tobago Film Company (Trinidad). She produces documentaries and videos and won special mention for the best locally produced film at the local TTFF film festival in 2009. Her videos have been included in international film festivals. Lee Loy’s literary fiction has been published by the St Petersburg Review, Akashic Books, NY, and Tongues of the Ocean’s Six-Word Stories. Her poetry appeared in Small Axe and was shortlisted for an award. Her art appears on several International and local academic publications.

ALICIA MILNE

Alicia Milne (b.1986) is an artist from Trinidad and Tobago. She makes objects, videos and works on paper that address issues of home, permanence and validity. Milne has exhibited her work regionally and internationally and has participated in residencies and seminars in the Netherlands and Puerto Rico. The Prince Claus Fund has also supported her work. Milne received a BA in Visual Arts with a Minor in Cultural Studies from the University of the West Indies in 2009.

NIKOLAI NOEL

Nikolai M Noel (Trinidad, b. 1976) was born in Belmont a suburb of the capital city of Port of Spain. He received a BA from the University of the West Indies in 2009 and an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2012. His early practice consisted of figurative and representational drawings. In 2010 Noel began to produce conceptual works and objects. Today Noel uses material to carry the content of his work as he creates post-minimalist objects, drawings and installations that engage history, identity and the sublime.

TAMARA TAM-CRUICKSHANK

Tamara Tam-Cruickshank is a Nichiren Shoshu Buddhist and artist. She has a BA in Visual Art, and is currently completing an Mphil in Cultural Studies. Her in- progress body of work is an exploration of Grey Spaces; her process is informed by the deconstructing of palimpsests. She has worked in various media, and has experience in digital filmmaking and photography, painting, installation and collage. Tamara has participated in local contemporary art exhibitions and projects, and in Art Bemao, Guadeloupe, in 2010. Presently, she is interrogating the built national heritage sites for her thesis research. Her work in this area thus far investigates and documents the “poetics and politics” of nationhood, national heritage and national identity. Tamara lives inconspicuously and happily with her family in Trinidad.

LUIS VASQUEZ LA ROCHE

Luis Vasquez La Roche was born in 1983 in Caracas, Venezuela and moved to Trinidad and Tobago in 2002. His works are explorations of personal experiences and his new adopted space and culture. He has participated in a several group exhibitions in Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, the Bahamas, Chile, Venezuela, Germany and the Netherlands. He had his first solo show in Trinidad in 2012. He was an artist in residence at OAZO AIR in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Luis Vasquez La Roche currently lectures in the University of Trinidad and Tobago.
