The first full performance of the new work by Adam Walters, Caitlyn Kamminga and Che Lovelace about the journey of the Merikins. Performed by UTT Musicians this promises to be a great new work centred on a Trinidadian story.

11145021_1093972847285125_664288471213697105_nRiver of Freedom is an arts-integrated work, written for narrator, solo voice and chamber ensemble, featuring original artwork by Trinidadian artist Che Lovelace.  Intended to engage audiences as it informs, this is a tale of the journey of the African American slaves who fought with the British in the War of 1812 in exchange for freedom and land.  Following the war the ex-soldiers were given 16 acres of land in the south of Trinidad.  According to their ancestors, these men were proud of being American and were known from then on as the ‘Merikins’.
