[tw-toggle title=”MISTAH SHAK – Biography”] Mistah Shak is a Trinbagonian singer/songwriter/musician/performer from the modest, but culturally vibrant southern town of Siparia. He has repeatedly proven to be an extremely intelligent lyricist, thought provoking songwriter, competent musician, unwavering and purposeful musical soldier, and is very astute at combining all these elements in the creation of his musical artistry and legacy.
Professionally involved in music & performing since 1997, however he has had semi-professional involvement for almost a decade prior, having joined his first band in 1990, at the age of 12, as a guitarist then moved to being the bassist. As a musician he has played, been exposed to & has vast experience & understanding of widely varied genres, having toured to places and events such as the Texas & Louisiana State Fairs, as a bass player and member of jazz/cross-over band Hi-Styles. As a vocalist/songwriter, he has been a recording artiste since 2001, having composed every song he’s recorded to date, which also span different genres & flavors, & has also co-produced/arranged many of them.
Mistah Shak has also shown his prowess in the calypso arena, creating a stir from his first official foray into the realm. He’s been a National Calypso Semi-Finalist on three (3) consecutive occasions from 2010-2012, and made his fourth & perhaps most impactful semi-final in 2014. He made it all the way to the Dimanche Gras Calypso Finals on his first official competitive attempt in calypso, in 2010, was a reserve finalist in 2012 & officially returned to “The Big Yard” as a finalist in 2014. He has also gone on to earn the titles of South/Central Calypso History Month Monarch in 2011, San Fernando Calypso Monarch 2012 & Political Calypso Monarch 2014. His songs “Rogue” & “Bois”, have both been nominated & listed among the Top 20 Calypsoes, of their respective years. The name Mistah Shak is also well respected in Trinidad & Tobago’s “underground” musical and artistic circles, where his often unplugged and acoustic contributions seem even more intense, unapologetic and unnerving, than some of his more ventilated material, but ultimately always prove to be awakening, empowering and uplifting. He is also the co-founder of “Trinfinity A.R.T.S.”, an alliance of artists from different artistic realms, through which they produce and promote events, all geared toward addressing socially prevalent and relevant issues.
[/tw-toggle] [tw-toggle title=”FREETOWN COLLECTIVE”] Freetown Collective is a tribe of highly passionate young people, at the core of which stand three young men, Keegan Maharaj, Lou Lyons and Muhammad Muwakil. Poets, Lyricists, Musicians, they are seeking with their work to continue the great heritage left to them by calypsonians, storytellers, poets and chantuelles who came before; to put their own spin on it, to share the stories of a generation that has yet to properly articulate its position in this every shifting world.
The Freetown concept follows on the notion that every man and woman has a personal responsibility to free themselves from negative mental and social chains so as to free their families, their neighbourhoods, their nations and indeed by extension, the world. So the music must remain a freeing agent creating within each listener a “free town” that he/she is able to build upon and move out to affect the world. The brothers agree that trinidad’s indigenous music and soul has moved so far from its center that it is no longer able to act as a a healing agent, the goal is to rekindle the flame. Bless the brighter day!
