Angela is a regular high-school girl; insecure, curious, but still trying to resist temptation.
But the thing about temptation is, it’s everywhere..
The play ‘Body=Barrier’ is about a lot of things. On one hand, it’s about youth, and insecurity, and that troublesome phase where you’re a nobody if you’re not in a clique. On the other, it’s simply about agency.
When I first introduced the play in 2013, I jokingly said that Body=Barrier was about ‘sex, drugs and spiritual warfare’. And all of that is true. The play is a conversation about peer pressure on youth and how that communicates with young people’s curiosity about things like sex and narcotics. There’s even mention about the ‘soul’, and the evil spirits that are often working to steal it away. For the non-religious, you will recognize those demons as personal – the voices that tell us that we are not deserving of Love and life, and sabotage our attempts to be happy with ourselves.
But what trumps all that for me is the fact that this is the story of a young girl, growing up in a world where she learns unfortunately that her feelings and desires might not matter… There is an almost sexist texture to how this girl’s inner and outer demons prevent her from doing and getting what she actually wants. But that, in a way, is a deliberate critique of not only an internalized depression but an external sexism that exists very much in real life. With or without demons.
I hope that when you all come to enjoy this amazing play with us, that you leave with your own tools to fight those demons, both internal and external.
Blessings, Compassion, Peace and Love.
