Green Screen 2016: The Big Picture

GREEN SCREEN is now a Festival! The annual series that has brought movies on environmental and sustainability issues to local audiences since 2011 is now fully fledged, and this year’s schedule of activities (November 1-12) will offer much more than movies.

Sustain T&T, the not-for-profit organisation that produces Green Screen, has once again selected a slate of relevant, diverse, impactful and critically-acclaimed movies that are not to be missed.

In addition, festival attendees can expect cocktail events, an outdoor screening and Bioblitz, student screenings, an elegant dinner event, artists on activism, Q&As and panel discussions with international environmental movers and shakers.

This year’s theme is The Big Picture. A special event by the same name will invite environmental stakeholders and the public at large to take stock of issues such as sustainable development, waste and water management, food production and climate change, and assess the way forward to achieving desirable goals for the nation at large.

The German Embassy, lead sponsor of Green Screen 2016, will again host a private media reception to launch the festival on October 14th at the Residence of the Ambassador.

On November 1st, the festival kicks off with its annual Benefit Launch at Digicel IMAX at One Woodbrook Place. Free screenings of films for primary and secondary school students will continue at the venue on November 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

Free film screenings will take place at Medulla Art Gallery on Fitt St in Woodbrook, including aQ&A with Jorge Thielen Armand, director of Flor de la Mar, which looks at a community of fishermen fighting to protect the ruins of the first European city built in the Americas, on a remote Venezuelan island; and at St Mary’s College Centenary Hall, with a panel discussion featuring founding members of the renowned environmental activist group Greenpeace who appear in the documentary How to Change the World, about the early days of the movement;

Other film events will take place at San Antonio Farms in Santa Cruz, where patrons will partake of a sumptuous locally-sourced dinner in collaboration with Our Moving Table; and at the Botanical Gardens in Port of Spain, where Green Screen will host a screening with a biodiversity focus to close off the Trinidad and Tobago Field Naturalists Club’s Bioblitz at their 2016 base.

Never Sorry, a movie about the work of Chinese artist and activist Ai Wei Wei, will also feature in the festival, along with a discussion with local artists on art and activism.

Following on the success of last year’s A Better Place film, produced by Sustain T&T to warm reviews, the organisation embarked on a film workshop project entitled Films from a Better Place. The initiative granted $5,000 and participation in a documentary workshop, with the aim of producing new and original local content that deals with environmental issues.

The work of the selected participants will be featured in this year’s festival.
