breaking blue

The Medulla Art Gallery facilitates “Breaking Blue”, an interactive exhibition hosted by the Art Therapy Association of Trinidad and Tobago.

As the name rightly suggests, “Breaking Blue” features the work of artists who engage in the process of art therapy as a way to cope with depression and co morbid disorders. The exhibition explores mental health through the eyes of both the client and the art therapist.

The exhibition not only allows the artists to tell their story through art, but also will give viewers insight on what it’s like living with mental health challenges, The therapists will also interact with clients in the form of responding to their pieces through art and providing a better understanding of how the art therapy process works and even how the clients’ challenges affect them as therapists. Viewers are also encouraged to participate in the interactive component of the exhibition.

The Art Therapy Association of T&T was recently formed with the goal of supporting and promoting Art Therapy in Trinidad and Tobago. The undertaking of the association includes:

  • Educational sessions, workshops, seminars and conferences related to the practice of art therapy, art psychotherapy and other therapeutic interventions.
  • Career guidance and placement opportunities for art therapists, art psychotherapists and other creative arts therapists.
  • Providing public awareness and support related to the activities of art therapists including public art and art therapy exhibitions, and media releases.
  • Developing and guiding the ethical practice of art therapy and art psychotherapy in Trinidad and Tobago.
  • Facilitating and supporting art therapy research in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Medulla Art Gallery proves to be the ideal venue to facilitate this event as they aim to use the space to demonstrate art, not only as a social expression, but also as a medium for therapy and growth.
