“Under the Mango Trees” – by Simeon Chris Moodoo

Simeon Chris Moodoo’s Under the Mango Trees, is an experimental play that attempts to create a performance that is identifiably Trinidadian and by extension Caribbean. The play also attempts to find a balance between minimalistic and realist styles. Additionally, the playwright uses the essences of the traditional enactments, traditional mas, folklore and cultural diversity of the people of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to deconstruct the traditional social conditioning of gender roles, politics and religious prejudices which exist in Trinbagonian and by extension the Caribbean society.

The play uses the signature movements of the Jab Jab, the Blue Devil, the Jab Mollasie, and Ballroom dances together with elements of Kalinda/stickfighting form, ritual and content. Additionally, Reggae, Soca and Hindi songs are used to drive and carry the action of the play. Finally, the content of Under the Mango Trees is crafted to be performed in the Little Carib Theatre or in any other Black-Box styled theatre and should ideally be viewed by an audience aged sixteen years and older (16+).
